OPENING THE TEMPLE.

OTERA CAFE began in 2014.

It started with a simple question:

“Could a temple become a place
people feel more at ease visiting?”

We wanted to make the temple
a little more open and approachable,
a place where anyone could simply stop by.

To have some tea.
To talk.
Or simply spend some time.

That was the idea
behind the name “OTERA CAFE.”

STAYING CONNECTED, WHILE CLOSING.

In 2020,
the COVID-19 pandemic made it difficult
to keep the temple open
as we always had.

Putting the safety and well-being
of our community first,
we spoke with our temple members
and kept asking ourselves:

How could we continue?

The answer we found was ISSEKI —
a new format welcoming
just one group a day, by reservation.

From a place open to anyone,
to a place where time was carefully prepared
for one group at a time.

It was a way to continue through the pandemic,
but it also gave us an opportunity
to rediscover the value
of simply spending time at the temple.

OPENING THE TEMPLE, ONCE AGAIN.

And now, in 2026.

As the pandemic has settled
and the way we live has gradually changed,
we looked back on everything we had done
and began to ask what we could do now.

We decided to open the temple once again.

But not in the same way as in 2014.

Not to come here to do something,
but simply to be.

Have some tea.
Read a book.
Look out at the garden.
Or do nothing at all.

“JUST BE” is where we have arrived
after all these years —
our new way of opening the temple.

project OTERA*CAFE

FROM CAFE TO PROJECT.

What’s changing
is more than how we spend time at the temple.

What began as a small initiative in 2014
has gradually grown beyond the temple
and into the community.

From the encounters and questions born here,
new places,
new things,
and new ways of spending time
have begun to emerge.

And in 2026,
OTERA CAFE begins again.

Not simply as a café,
but as a local project where JUGENJI
works together with the community
to create new possibilities for what a temple can be.

The name remains the same.

project OTERA*CAFE

From the temple,
to the community.

Together with life in this place.
